Pro MHI Africa

About the Project…

  • Within the project “Pro MHI Africa” the Department of Cooperative Studies at the University of Cologne in cooperation with the University of Botswana, University of Ghana and University of Malawi will analyse the efficiency and sustainability of micro health insurance units  in the three cooperating countries and also accompany chosen adequate institutions within the project period of two years in a science-based way.
  • The project focuses on the impact of local micro health insurance units in the three cooperating countries as well as how these are designed and which problems they face and fear.
  • It will be proofed which new approaches could be advisable, implementable and acceptable in a scientific way to meet future challenges.
  • To analyse the phenomenon of micro health insurance extensively, quantitative, qualitative and experimental methods of empirical social research will be used.
  • Via these scientific findings the cooperating universities aim at the development of practically oriented teaching material to develop a common curriculum in the domain of micro health insurance for students as well as practice-oriented training modules for micro insurance practitioners.
  • A common micro insurance certificate will be introduced to prepare students as policy makers of the future for the expanding (micro) insurance markets in their countries.
  • Local policy makers and politicians will be supported in the development and implementation of micro health insurance promoting policies.
  • Existing micro health insurance units will be encouraged as well as  training material for members and managers of micro health insurance units will be developed to face specific problems of the analysed insurance units.
  • Improved health financing mechanisms will lead to better access of poor parts of the society to health services.
